LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Students in the Clark County School District continue to skip classes at an alarming rate, even as the district has launched efforts to crack down on absenteeism.
CCSD data shows nearly half of high schoolers in North Las Vegas are considered chronically absent.
Data that ends at the 2023-2024 winter break, shows districtwide one in three students were chronically absent, which means a student missed more than 10% of their school days.
The following high schools had one of the highest rates of absenteeism for their student body in North Las Vegas: Mojave, 47%; Cheyenne, 47%; Canyon Springs, 47%; and Legacy, 42%.
As part of CCSD’s Every Day Matters campaign that launched at the start of this school year, administrators are paying home visits to problem kids.
CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara discussed this at a school board meeting last November.
“As we do, the team does our monthly home visits in specific areas. Our schools are doing home visits on a weekly, daily basis, but it’s for us to be able to understand the root cause,” Dr. Jara said on Nov. 9, 2023.
