1 officer shot, 1 injured in east Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer was shot and another officer was injured in the east valley on Friday, a source confirmed to 8 News Now Investigators.

It happened near U.S. 95 and east Charleston Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m. as officers were responding to reports of a suicidal person walking in traffic.

When officers located the person a “violent struggle” took place and that is when an officer was shot in the leg, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Undersheriff Andrew Walsh told 8 News Now.

Another officer headed to the area to assist was injured in a traffic incident, police said.

Both officers were taken to a nearby hospital and a suspect was detained during the incident.

The officer who was shot in the leg appeared to be “alert and awake” and had non-life-threatening injuries as of Friday evening, according to Undersheriff Walsh.

U.S. 95 at Boulder Highway was closed for a time due to police activity. The roadway re-opened minutes later, however, traffic slowly moved shortly after 6 p.m.
