LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Police were able to track down a driver accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist because part of the suspect vehicle’s bumper, which included a serial number, was left on the roadway.
Kevin Searly is facing charges of not stopping at the scene of a crash and destroying or concealing evidence. Las Vegas Metropolitan police said he could also face additional charges once the test results for alcohol and drugs are complete.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 9 on Lake Mead Boulevard, east of D Street when Searly’s Kia Optima allegedly struck and killed a bicyclist. A second vehicle also hit the bicyclist, but that driver, who was later contacted by police, said he believed he had just run over vehicle debris in the roadway, not a person.
According to Searly’s arrest report, the second driver told police he stopped to check his truck after running over what he thought was debris and saw a dark-colored vehicle with a missing bumper stopped on the road and a man standing next to it. As he approached him, the man got into his car, made an abrupt U-turn, and left.
