2 inmates stabbed at Las Vegas-area prison

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Two inmates were stabbed by two other inmates at High Desert State Prison Wednesday afternoon, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

All four inmates belong to the same gang, a spokesperson told the 8 News Now Investigators.

One inmate was taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit by helicopter while the other was taken there by ambulance, the department reported.

All of the inmates were wearing restraints, the spokesperson said.

The incident occurred after 2 p.m. during “tier time,” when inmates are permitted to spend time outside of their cells, for example, to make phone calls, a spokesperson said. It occurred between “close custody” inmates who are one level below maximum-security inmates, the department reported.

An internal investigation is underway while the prison remains on lockdown.

High Desert State Prison is a maximum-security prison facility located near Indian Springs, which is approximately a 45-minute drive north of Las Vegas.
