Amazon-backed self-driving car company rolls out futuristic-looking robotaxis in California, Nevada

Autonomous vehicle company Zoox has made significant strides this year, launching its robotaxi on the streets of San Francisco and expanding its geofence in Las Vegas. These moves strengthen Zoox’s presence in California and Nevada, setting the stage for broader autonomous ride-hailing services.

“This marks our entrance with the robotaxi into our second commercial market,” said CEO Aicha Evans. The company has been testing its fleet in San Francisco since 2017 with safety drivers. Now, after passing stringent safety checks, Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi will begin testing in the SoMa neighborhood, though rides will initially be limited to Zoox employees.

“Zoox is the only company deploying a purpose-built robotaxi on public roads without traditional manual controls,” noted Co-Founder and CTO Jesse Levinson. San Francisco is Zoox’s third operational city, following Foster City and Las Vegas. With extensive testing in diverse urban environments over seven years, Zoox’s AI system is primed for a full rollout.
