LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — A Las Vegas judge ordered a 20-year-old man held on a half-million dollars bail Thursday, a day after a crash that killed one man and injured two others just 11 minutes into the Christmas holiday.
Records show Giraldo Salas-Chacon is being held at Clark County Detention Center on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving, both resulting in death. The crash happened just after midnight on December 25 on Maryland Parkway near the intersection of Sahara Avenue.
Thursday in Las Vegas Justice Court, prosecutors asked for — and were granted — $500,000 bail. They argued that Salas-Chacon was driving his Dodge Journey at 105 mph, some 75 mph over the posted speed limit on Maryland. Prosecutors argued that Salas-Chacon was uncooperative with police when they arrived.
“The fact that you’re 20 years old and violating the law by consuming alcohol and getting behind the wheel of car shows this court that you are a danger to this community and that you don’t follow the laws of the state,” Judge Suzan Baucum told Salas-Chacon, through an interpreter, before she sent him back to CCDC Thursday.
