Dad, ex-husband of North Carolina murder victims calls for death penalty for suspect

HENDERSON, Nev. (WAVY) — As Andrew Scoggins mourns the loss of his son and ex-wife, he said police in this Las Vegas suburb failed to test the man charged in their murders for drugs or alcohol.

Evan Scoggins, 20, and his mother Anastasia Akutsina, 44, were shot to death in October in the home they shared with her husband Karl Groschen, 41. Groschen was indicted in November on two counts of murder, and Nevada authorities are seeking the death penalty.

Groschen was captured on Henderson Police bodycam video admitting to the shootings.

“There’s two dead bodies,” Groschen tells a responding officer, referring to his home and garage. “You’ve just got to arrest me.”

“Who are they?’ the officer asked.

“My wife and my stepson,” Groschen told the officer.

Groschen was carrying a canned beverage and two prescription bottles. He claimed self-defense.

“You’ve got to take me,” Groschen told police. “I thought they were trying to kill me.”
