Rental scam resurfaces in Las Vegas as scammers exploit high rents and housing shortage

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A familiar rental scam is making a comeback in Las Vegas, exploiting the city’s high rents and housing shortage with new tactics that can easily deceive desperate renters.

Cole McMillan, a prospective renter, shared his experience with a scam that nearly cost him. “My friend was on Facebook Market trying to help me find a good rental, and this guy’s house popped up – beautiful home,” McMillan said. The listing advertised a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a pool for just $1,500. “This is kinda too good to be true,” McMillan recalled thinking.

Despite his doubts, McMillan pursued the rental, but red flags emerged when the supposed owner failed to meet him in person. “Get to the house the first day on Sunday, and he didn’t answer his phone. He made an excuse – sorry, I’m at church,” McMillan said. After multiple attempts to meet, McMillan discovered the owner could unlock the house remotely, prompting him to walk away without losing money…
