A new law can help others do the same.
“I worked 13 years on the strip in hospitality. I hurt my back, over-prescribed meds, and worse and worse, and spiraled out of control,” says George Petty, now programs director with Shine a Light. He looks back on what led him to the streets and then, out. After 45 days behind bars, he was a client of the same non-profit he works for now. First, receiving treatment for substance abuse. He explains what happened next: “I did some job training, secured employment, got a bank account, got my ID back, my drivers license, and little by little, I started rebuilding my life and reconnecting with my wife and son and I knew this was the work I wanted to do.”…
