LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Henderson City Council will discuss at its next meeting a $595,000 settlement with a man — a decorated Navy veteran with no criminal history — who a police detective mistakenly accused of a series of burglaries and robberies resulting in the man’s arrest and eight days “in isolation” in jail, documents obtained by the 8 News Now Investigators reveal.
Documents — including a letter from the man’s attorney in San Diego, California — show Alexander Fidel Lopez, 33, was wrongfully arrested and detained because police tied him to a phone number he hadn’t used since 2018. Alexander Fidel Lopez was 350 miles away from Henderson at the time of the crime police were investigating, has a different birthday than their original suspect and never lived in Henderson or Nevada, documents said.
Alexander Fidel Lopez served in the Navy from 2008-2012 and in the Navy reserves until 2016, his lawyer’s letter said. He was awarded with medals for achievement, conduct and service, among other things, and was honorably discharged…
