Lake Mead Warning Issued Over ‘Lethal Temperatures’

An extreme heat warning is in effect for Lake Mead and the surrounding areas on Monday, highlighting the risk of “lethal temperatures” as triple-digit highs are expected.

Why It Matters

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that extreme heat can cause illnesses, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health issues.

Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include intense sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness and nausea. The agency estimates that more than 700 people die each year in the U.S. from extreme heat exposure.

What To Know

Areas impacted by the alert, issued by the agency’s Las Vegas office, include Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Death Valley National Park, Northeast Clark County, Western Clark and Southern Nye counties, the Las Vegas Valley and Southern Clark County.

The service said that high temperatures between 100 and 115 are expected in Las Vegas and Moapa. Temperatures between 110 and 115 are possible in Amargosa Valley, Pahrump and Indian Springs, the service said…
