North Las Vegas neighbors turn out, address immigration concerns

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Despite immigration fears, North Las Vegas neighbors met with officials Tuesday to discuss a variety of law enforcement issues. The good turnout, a possible sign of the community’s trust.

The quarterly Community Connection event was an opportunity for the North Las Vegas Police Department, NLV Code Enforcement, and Clark County School District police to engage with the residents. Around fifty neighbors attended the meetup and even the presenters acknowledged the attendance and anxiety.

“I had a couple people call and say, ‘I don’t want to call the police because I don’t want to go to jail,’” North Las Vegas Councilwoman Ruth Garcia-Anderson said. “I said you aren’t going to go to jail, but we are going to go in and assist them.”

Garcia-Anderson said she was glad to see her neighborhood come out and force and ask questions about how to better their community with the assistance of city resources—the general anxiety not stopping them.

“One of the things that I that I say to my constituents when they call, when they reach out and they have concerns, ‘Come to these events,” she said. “We know that there’s so much information out there that is not it’s not true. It’s not accurate. And what better opportunity to come to the library, which is a safe space. It’s a space where families, children come.”…
