Paradise Palms residents frustrated over community’s squatter situation

LAS VEGAS — Residents of Paradise Palms are expressing frustration over the community’s ongoing squatter situation. One property gaining the spotlight is 3369 Nahatan Way, a home that has been abandoned for four years.

Neighbors have reported that squatters have taken over the property, and Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom recently visited the site to address the issue. Neighbors anticipated an additional tour of multiple properties in the area with Segerblom and Las Vegas Metro Police Department officers. What they got was less than what they hoped.

Rose Hockenson, a resident of Paradise Palms, said, “I thought it was going to be a ride-along or a walk through the neighborhood type thing. That is what we were told.” Instead, residents were met with a one-hour conversation in front of the property, rather than the anticipated tour of the multiple abandoned sites.

Segerblom assured residents that he is committed to resolving the issue. “I said. We will come out. Let me see it. Bring the cops. Bring the code enforcement bring help and let us see what we can do,” he said. The property is set to be boarded up again by code enforcement, and Segerblom has located one of the current homeowners to discuss the property’s future.

Despite the eviction of squatters last week, there are concerns they may have returned. Help of Southern Nevada workers reported seeing a figure inside the property, although the door remains locked. Neighbors have also reported a hole in the roof, with one resident, Traci Jones, calling 911 after spotting suspected squatters on the roof. “I called 9-1-1 as soon as I got home. Because I knew that there was nobody supposed to be anybody in the house,” Jones said. She suggested to News 3 officers did not respond to the house because she does not own the property.

However, Jones remains hopeful about Segerblom’s efforts, citing his past work to reduce homelessness. “It is frustrating at first because you make phone calls and nothing happens but when Tick stands here and says call me. You call him and he handles it,” she said…
