Businesses report drop in customers during Maryland Parkway roadwork

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nearly a year after transportation officials broke ground on a $330 million project, cones line the road and work continues.

The project will improve bus stops, designate a lane for buses and bicycles, widen sidewalks and more along Maryland Parkway. In the meantime, it’s cones everywhere while work goes on.

Those cones squeeze traffic down to one lane at times. For drivers, it can be a headache, and the pain is worse for businesses. Timo Kuusela, vice president and general manager of the Boulevard Mall, says it drives people away.

“I have to navigate it because I have to go to work, but if you’re choosing to come here, you may choose to go somewhere else just because of the traffic,” Kuusela said.

He said store owners in the mall are reporting a drop in business. “Somewhere between 10% and 20% is not an understatement,” Kuusela said…
