Famous Lake Mead ‘vertical speedboat’ removed, park officials confirm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It was an icon. The measuring stick of a drought in its 25th year. You couldn’t call it a landmark — it was more of a watermark. A popular photo opp. An artifact of man and nature.

And now it’s gone, Lake Mead officials have confirmed.

The National Park Service has removed the speedboat that was sticking out of Lake Mead. On Friday, July 25, the boat’s brief moment in the sun ended as it was pulled out — in pieces, according to one person, but unconfirmed by officials.

A social media post portrayed the operation as costly, stranding an expensive piece of equipment onshore at Government Wash. Another showed something still in the water on July 27, apparently a chunk of the boat.

Lake Mead officials provided no details on how they did the job, but they did explain why…
