Nevada prison leaders point to ‘drug debt’ after recent string of homicides

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada prison leaders said ‘drug debt’ appears to be a factor after a recent string of homicides inside two Las Vegas-area prisons. As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, four inmates were killed in four separate homicides at High Desert State Prison and Southern Desert Correctional Center within the past month.

The Nevada Department of Corrections is “consulting outside experts to determine ways to curtail the influx of contraband and illegal substances into the institutions,” Director James Dzurenda said.
