Humanizing homeless outreach at an abandoned church with HELP of Southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — It is another News 3 exclusive in Clark County’s ongoing homeless and squatting crisis. Our crew is finding people living in a supposedly abandoned church. The discovery was made during a day spent with the Homeless Response Teams from HELP of Southern Nevada, led by Director Louis Lacey.

The team, known for their outreach efforts across Clark County, was initially exploring a homeless community located in a power line lot with News 3 in tow when they stumbled upon the abandoned worship house. Lacey explained the team’s mission for the day, saying, “We are heading down. We are looking for encampments on Sahara.”

His Homeless Response Teams provide essential services to those in need, including resources for shelter, therapy, and supplies such as water, food, and tarps. They also distribute Narcan, a life-saving drug used to reverse overdoses. “We are noticing more overdoses and we are working to get Narcan out to as many people as possible because we know it saves lives,” said Lacey.

After several minutes searching for life in the old church, News 3 witnessed HELP make contact with two individuals. One accepting some services; the other rejecting offers for assistance from HELP.

Describing the experience of encountering such situations, Lacey said, “It is just, it is adventurous. We are excited to be able to interact with people and maybe offer people help. You do not know what is going through the mind of the person that is in a place like this.”…
