Clark County grand jury decision sparks calls for police reform

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A Clark County grand jury’s decision not to indict Metro Officer Alexander Bookman in the fatal shooting of local homeowner Brandon Durham has left some community members dissatisfied and reignited calls for police reform.

Officer Bookman shot Durham multiple times last November after Durham called 911 to report a break-in at his home. The grand jury concluded there was insufficient evidence to formally charge Bookman. David Roger, general counsel for the Las Vegas Police Protective Association and former Clark County district attorney, said, “What we believe is indisputable is that Officer Bookman was doing his job and he did not have criminal intent.”

Durham’s family is pursuing justice through a civil lawsuit filed in April and has discussed with Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford the possibility of establishing an independent agency to investigate police shootings. Currently, local police departments conduct their own investigations…
