Decline in Tourism Spurs Call for Change in Las Vegas Casinos
The recent drop in tourism throughout Las Vegas and Nevada has led advocates for non-smokers to urge casinos to eliminate the exemption that currently permits smoking on gaming floors. They argue that ending this exemption could attract more visitors and improve revenue.
Non-Smokers Avoid Casinos Due to Smoke-Filled Environments
Contrary to the belief that smokers are essential to casino profits, studies have repeatedly challenged this notion. Advocates highlight that younger generations are increasingly reluctant to visit casinos in person. Many prefer online gambling options, and very few under 40 are regular patrons of physical casino locations.
Additionally, the presence of cigarette smoke deters young people from entering gaming areas. Statistics reveal a stark decrease in smoking among adults under 30, with only 6% reporting cigarette use in the past week, compared to 35% in the early 2000s.
The head of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, Cynthia Hallett, has called on casinos in Las Vegas and other areas to recognize this change in public preference, noting that around 90% of Americans do not smoke.
