Nevada & California Monsoon Update: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Today

Las Vegas, NV – Another round of thunderstorms is expected to move across the Southwest today, bringing heavy rain and frequent lightning to parts of Nevada, California, and Arizona.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, thunderstorm activity Friday will resemble a more traditional monsoon day, with storms developing over higher terrain before moving into valleys. Officials said rainfall could be heavy at times, with localized flooding possible.

Monsoon rainfall totals are already stacking up across the region. From June 15 through Sept. 18, Las Vegas recorded 0.95 inches of rain—well above the normal 0.26 inches for the season. Barstow, California, also saw 1.13 inches compared to its typical 0.59. In Arizona, Kingman has received 2.54 inches so far this season, nearly a full inch above its normal 1.74.
