In anticipation of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Las Vegas kicked off its celebrations with a free community event hosted by Commissioner Jim Gibson and Clark County Parks and Recreation on Sept. 12 at the Whitney Recreation Center. The Whitney Hispanic Heritage Celebration invited the Las Vegas community to embrace cultural pride and community connection while enjoying authentic catering from Abuela’s Tacos, arts and crafts for the entire family, live mariachi music, traditional folklorico dance performances and an awards ceremony highlighting influential Hispanic community leaders.
Commissioner Gibson promoted fostering meaningful community engagement at this event in Clark County’s announcement, stating, “This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to honor the rich history, vibrant cultures, and significant contributions of Hispanic Americans to our community,” said Gibson, before adding, “it’s a testament to the strength and diversity that make our county so special.”
The Whitney Hispanic Heritage Celebration attracted strong community participation. Among those involved in the event was Bris Villegas, who said, “I saw the flyer and the word hispanic and I’m like okay, I’m there. I want to shake it out. I know there’s going to be music and hispanic food so I wanted a little taste so I can remember where I’m from. And just right away I’m like, hispanic? I want to be there.”…
