Community mourns 12-year-old Jojo McGee at candlelight ceremony

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A somber mood enveloped Mater East Academy on Wednesday evening as the community gathered to mourn the loss of 12-year-old Jovonn “Jojo” McGee-Thomas. Jojo was tragically killed on Sunday morning when a van struck him while he was riding an electric scooter at the intersection of Tully Ave. and Hidden Desert Way, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

Jojo’s mother, Mishon Thomas, expressed her grief, saying, “Getting that call was the worst thing that has happened to me in my entire life. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same.” His father, Tyron Thomas, added, “You know things like this happen, you know, you just don’t imagine it’s real. So it’s hard for us right now. But this helps quite a bit.”

The ceremony, attended by hundreds of students, staff, parents, and friends, highlighted Jojo’s impact on those around him. Renee Fairless, Mater Academy lead principal, remarked, “To have all of you come together, it just shows not only what family means at Mater, but what this particular family has meant to all of us.”…
