Henderson police kick off pedestrian safety campaign

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Henderson Police Department kicked off its Pedestrian Safety Campaign early this week after receiving a 2026 Joining Forces Grant.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety — Office of Traffic Safety awarded the Henderson Police Department a $174,500 grant to support participation in the “Joining Forces” traffic safety campaign that will run from October 2025 through September 2026. The campaign began on Oct. 13.

Here are some tips and reminders for drivers from Henderson police:

  • Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks—marked or unmarked.
  • Stop well back from crosswalks so others can see pedestrians.
  • Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. They are stopped to allow pedestrians to cross the street.
  • Remain stopped until pedestrians finish crossing your lane or reach the median.

Here are some tips and reminders for pedestrians:

  • Use sidewalks and stay clear of traffic.
  • Put away phones and earbuds while walking.
  • Never assume a driver sees you; make eye contact before crossing in front of them.
  • Be cautious at driveways and traffic exits.
  • Give drivers time to stop. At 35 mph, it takes about six seconds.
  • Cross at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect you.
