Las Vegas judge determines accused hit-and-run driver is competent for trial

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The criminal case against a man accused of driving impaired and killing a 12-year-old walking to school will continue after a judge found him competent for trial.

Oh’Ryan Brooks, 27, faces DUI and reckless driving-related charges after the crash on Oct. 3. Brooks was driving a white SUV near Owens Avenue and 21st Street when police said he struck Cristofer Suarez and then drove off.

In court Friday, Clark County District Court Judge Christy Craig determined Brooks was competent to stand trial. The ruling means two doctors determined Brooks understands the charges against him and he can help in his defense…
