Nevada’s new state superintendent of public instruction to focus on literacy, graduation rates

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Nevada’s new state superintendent of public instruction says his priorities are to improve reading outcomes, hold charter schools to a high bar, and make sure students are prepared beyond graduation.

Victor Wakefield spoke with 8 News Now on Wednesday for his first interview since starting on Oct. 27.

Nevada governor names new superintendent of public instruction

“If there’s one thing that parents expect their school to deliver on, beyond a safe and affirming space, it is that their child is learning to read,” Wakefield said.

Two-thirds of Nevada’s youth attend the Clark County School District, and Wakefield said he’s concerned about a group of students who have left school.

“One of the data points that really sits with me is we have a high number of disconnected youths,” Wakefield said…
