Students rally against rising college costs in Nevada

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Students across Nevada are pushing back against a proposed tuition and fee hike that could raise the cost of college over the next three years.

The Nevada System of Higher Education said the increases are needed to cover a nearly $46-million shortfall created mostly by long-overdue pay raises for faculty and staff, but some students said they can’t afford it.

“I’m not a huge fan of that; it’s already a lot we’re paying for, I’m not even paying for any dorm fees or anything like that, just tuition, and I feel like I pay enough,” said UNLV student Brett Davis.

According to the proposal, lower-division classes at two-year colleges like CSN would go up about 9 percent, while upper-division and university courses would increase by roughly 12 percent over the next three years…
