According to the arrest report, officers said when they arrived at the scene, Vanderhall, whose arms and face were covered in blood, let the officers into the condo, where Oriti was found dead on the floor with numerous “knife wounds to her face and neck.”

Vanderhall told police he attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself and trying to hang himself inside a closet, the arrest report stated.

A family friend, who met the police at the scene and was helping Oriti move out of the apartment that afternoon, said he believed the two had a cordial relationship and wasn’t aware of any violence between them. After leaving the condo, Oriti told her friend she was going back to the apartment to “make sure she had everything and say goodbye to Maurice,” the report said.
