The Animal Foundation, Southern Nevada’s largest government–subsidized shelter, lost nearly $10.6 million in 2024, more than twice its $4.2 million loss in 2023, according to the non-profits’s tax return. The organization’s assets decreased from $41 million to $30.6 million.
TAF did not respond to requests for comment, however, Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley cited a variety of “non-cash events” in 2024 that she says account for $7.6 million of the loss.
- The City of Las Vegas, Clark County, and North Las Vegas purchased the shelter building for roughly $15 million, but the asset was valued at $20 million on TAF’s books, creating a loss of more than $4 million on paper;
- TAF wrote off an uncollectible pledge of $2 million; and,
- The shelter had a depreciation expense of $1.3 million.
The remaining loss of $2.9 million is the result of expenses exceeding revenue, Berkley said…
