Las Vegas man who kept children in cage says prison sentence is too harsh

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man accused of severely abusing his children and putting at least two of them in a dog cage told a judge Tuesday that the prison sentence he initially agreed to is too harsh.

In October, Travis Doss, 34, pleaded guilty to six counts of child abuse, with the stipulation that he serve 18 to 72 years in prison, documents said.

In 2023, Las Vegas Metro police found six children home alone while two of them were locked in a dog cage, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported. The oldest child was 11 at the time. Body camera video showed officers rescuing the children.

Clark County District Court Judge Nadia Krall was scheduled to sentence Doss on Tuesday. Doss instead told the judge he felt the guilty-plea process was rushed.

“I feel like 18 to 72 years, my kids are going to be grown,” Doss said. “I’ll miss their whole childhood. I just want an opportunity to get back with my kids.”…
