Las Vegas police officer shoots suspect following traffic stop

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer early Friday morning about one mile west of the Las Vegas Strip. This is the second officer-involved shooting in the past two days.

The shooting was reported shortly after 1 a.m. and involved a traffic stop of an unregistered vehicle near Valley View Boulevard and Twain Avenue. Those roads remain closed to traffic as police conduct an investigation.

“At one point, a passenger in the vehicle fled on foot, causing a foot pursuit to be initiated between the officer and the suspect,” Captain Ryan Wiggins with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said.

The suspect ran and hid behind a vehicle, “and was reaching into his waistband, and officers believed him to be armed,” according to Wiggins. No details were released on whether a weapon was found on the suspect.

Wiggins said the officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to surrender, which were not followed, and a low-lethal option was used on the suspect, which was ineffective…
