Las Vegas police shoot man after mistaking phone for gun

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Metro police officer shot a man after he ignored commands to drop what officers believed was a gun — police later determined the object was a phone, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Around 1 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, a Metro police officer stopped an unregistered vehicle on Valley View Boulevard near Twain Avenue, just west of the Las Vegas Strip. Wunya Lynum, 24, a passenger in the car, ran off after the officer discovered Lynum provided incorrect identification, documents said.

Lynum then hid under a car as more officers arrived to find and arrest him, police said. The officers saw Lynum “holding an unknown object” and ordered him to drop it, documents said…
