Helicopters to scan Las Vegas Strip for radiation

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Officials are alerting the public to low-flying helicopters expected over the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding areas in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), under the U.S. Department of Energy, will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights from Monday, Dec. 29, through Wednesday, Dec. 31, as part of routine security preparations ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Strip.

According to NNSA, its Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) Aerial Measuring System aircraft will be used to measure expected background radiation levels to help protect public health and safety during the large-scale event…
