Man accused in deadly hit-and-run near Las Vegas sign worked at LA sheriff’s dept.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man accused of killing a person in a hit-and-run near the Welcome to Las Vegas sign on New Year’s Day is a 27-year veteran of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, according to documents 8 News Now obtained Monday.

On Thursday, Jan. 1, at around 1 a.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received several calls about a woman who was hit by a vehicle near the famous sign. Callers said the woman was lying in the roadway and did not appear to be awake, according to an arrest report.

Medical personnel responded to the scene and took the woman, later identified as Lynessa Perkins, 43, to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Perkins was visiting from Kansas, police said.

A witness to the hit-and-run said he was visiting the sign when he saw a vehicle hit Perkins, who was walking in the farthest left travel lane…
