Reed was found dead in the aftermath of a fire that tore through three acres of Whitney Mesa Nature Preserve on Jan. 14, just after 4:30 a.m., according to his sister Summer Carpenter. Carpenter said the news of the fire spread among investigators and finally accumulated to detectives inquiring about Reed at a family member’s home.

“I ended up calling the Coroner’s, and she called me back and she let me know that there was an ID found, but since the condition of the body was so bad, they couldn’t ID him then,” Carpenter said. “And Friday, I got confirmation at 6:30 in the morning that it was him. And it was very hard.”
