LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The minute or so it took for police to shoot a man holding a 3-year-old boy – resulting in the death of that man and the toddler – will forever haunt the police officers involved, 911 operators who fielded phone calls and paramedics who treated the victim, an attorney and self-described “unapologetic advocate for law enforcement and first responders” told the 8 News Now Investigators.
Early Tuesday morning, officers responded to a call of a man battering a woman and attempting to remove a child from the home. When officers arrived at the apartment complex on Maryland Parkway, south of Windmill Lane, they discovered the man had a handgun and had fired a shot in the parking lot, and then went back inside the apartment. When he came out holding the toddler, police say they were forced to fire their weapons, killing both the man and the little boy.
Lance J. Lorusso, founder of the Blue Line Lawyer Institute and author of three books, including When Cops Kill, said the moment it took for the officer-involved shooting to unfold will have long-lasting ramifications. He also said any police investigation – despite the public’s thirst for quick answers – could take considerably longer than one might think.
