Celebrating Malasada Day at a local Hawaiian donut shop

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — While Fat Tuesday is celebrated in many ways, in Hawaii it’s known as Malasada Day, and that sweet island tradition has made its way to Las Vegas.

Good Day Las Vegas’ JC Fernandez was live at Pipeline Malasadas, learning all about the malasada and what goes into making these delicious treats.

JC was joined by owner Gayla Young, who explained that malasadas are light, fluffy, Portuguese-style fried dough, traditionally rolled in sugar and enjoyed fresh and warm.

Young shared that in Hawaii, Fat Tuesday is all about malasadas, with locals lining up to enjoy them before Ash Wednesday. Since the next is the start of Lent, many people indulge and go big on Malasada Day, loading up on the sweet treats before giving them up for the next 40 days…
