Judge rules in favor of Las Vegas police in dispute over jail release

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Clark County District Court judge sided with Las Vegas Metro police after the department refused to release a defendant on an ankle monitor, intensifying a legal dispute over whether judges or the sheriff controls those decisions.

In her order dated Friday, March 13, Clark County District Court Judge Erika Mendoza sided with the police department on its refusal to place a defendant on its medium-electronic monitoring program.

Metro operates a program that allows some defendants to remain out of jail with an ankle monitor or while on house arrest. Judges order the level of restriction, often with a bail amount. Various levels of the program require different levels of confinement. About 450 defendants are in the program at a time…
