Fatal Brightline crash: Train hits, kills person walking along South Florida tracks

A Brightline train struck and killed a pedestrian just north of Fort Lauderdale this week, investigators said.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately disclose the name, age or gender of the person who died. It also did not specify what type of train was involved. The Miami television station WSVN-7 reported that a Brightline train was involved.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. Crews were called to the 2900 block of North Dixie Highway in Oakland Park, about 5 miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Investigators the collision initially occurred in the city of Wilton Manors, with the train coming to a stop in Oakland Park, its neighbor to the north.

Brightline crashes involving pedestrians or vehicles at train crossings have occurred regularly since the rail line began service between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2018. More than 30 crashes have taken place in Palm Beach County alone.
