Miami Beach man barricades himself in apartment after tirade. SWAT team gets him out

A man barricaded himself in his Miami Beach apartment after yelling and throwing a glass table at a child and injuring her, and prompting a large SWAT response on early Tuesday morning, according to police.

Around 11 p.m. Monday, neighbors of 36-year-old Jeffrey Wheatley called 911 after he kicked in the gate of their 1330 Pennsylvania Ave. apartment complex. He then began to yell and throw things from his second-floor apartment at people sitting in the courtyard, according to his arrest report.

A young girl was injured after he threw a glass-top table from the courtyard at her, causing cuts to her foot and arms. Police did not identify the girl or list her age.

The girl’s father and other witnesses told police that Wheatley “began to yell profanities such as ‘what the f*** which he directed at her and the group,” according to his arrest report.

The girl’s father carried her to safety and she was treated by Miami Beach Fire Rescue at the scene, the arrest report stated.

Police say Wheatley then barricaded himself in his apartment and refused to cooperate with police after the department’s hostage negotiation and SWAT teams were deployed.
