Hialeah has found itself the backdrop for an unusual theft, where a man allegedly took to rooftops in search of feathered loot. According to NBC Miami, police arrested Lazaro M. Diaz, who was reportedly caught on camera last Monday, September 22 around 2:50 a.m., scaling a home and stuffing numerous pigeons into a bag.
Not only were the birds taken from the rooftop, but Diaz is also accused of pilfering additional pigeons from outside the camera’s sight, contained within a separate cage, the footage, revealing his distinct tattoos, aided police in identifying him through prior encounters and body-worn camera footage from previous incidents within the city, leading to his capture while he loitered in the area of East 8th Avenue and East 26th Street. Diaz now faces burglary and grand theft charges, which have since been revised to petty theft, and he is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK).
Meanwhile, Local 10 provided additional context to the bizarre incident, noting that the home located on the 600 block of West 15th Street in Hialeah became an unlikely target for such a crime.
