Injured American crocodile treated by Zoo Miami vets

An injured American crocodile named “Britney” has received additional treatment and care by the team at Zoo Miami. Originally noted swimming near Key Largo with a three-foot spear protruding from the back of her head, she evaded wildlife officials until Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Zoo Miami professionals successfully rescued her.

Once captured, the crocodile was transported to Zoo Miami, where head veterinarian Dr. Gwen Myers removed the spear. Radiographs showed further evidence of injury – a bullet lodged in her head from someone shooting her in the left eye.

Veterinarians Dr. Gwen Myers and Dr. Megan Freeman were assisted by veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Lorraine Karpinski in evaluating the eye, and unfortunately the damage from the bullet has likely caused permanent vision loss. There are no plans to remove the bullet at this time…
