You’re never too far away from an art installation (or two) here in the city, especially with Art Basel and Miami Art Week approaching. And this year, Faena Art is celebrating a decade in the city by adding yet another spectacular display to check off of our never-ending list of unmissable artworks.
“Library of Us,” a luminous, 50-foot kinetic sculpture by contemporary British artist Es Devlin, is set to serve as a bookshelf for beachgoers with 2,500 books that have been most influential on the artist. Residing at the Faena Hotel’s beachfront, the sculpture will sit within a circular reflecting pool surrounded by a 70-foot-wide collective reading table.
As it rotates like a mirrored compass needle, visitors are welcome to sit and connect with others through shared reading. Each day, Devlin will set the reading table with her personally annotated books while phrases from 250 books are illuminated on an LED subtitle screen, accompanied by a recording of the artist’s voice and music from contemporary composers Polyphonia.
The triangular bookshelf will be on view to the general public from December 2 to 7, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is also the case for other Faena Art installations by Devlin this year, such as “Reading Room” inside the Faena Cathedral, and “Tracing Time” in the Faena Project Room, an exhibit showcasing the artist’s layered drawings and paintings on glass and TV screens. You can learn more about them here.
Once Art Week concludes, the installation’s 2,500 books will be donated to public libraries and schools across Miami…
