A chaotic scene unfolded on the Rickenbacker Causeway over the weekend as an ATV driver collided with a police car during what authorities are describing as an illegal mass ride by dirt bike and ATV enthusiasts. WSVN reported that 28-year-old Jonny Maravilla, identified by police as the ATV driver, was part of a group of over 50 riders when he allegedly smashed into a police vehicle that was blocking traffic.
Maravilla, from Homestead, was sent to the hospital for injuries sustained in the incident, but no other injuries were reported. Following his discharge, he faced charges including coordinated drag racing and eluding an officer, WSVN noted. The swarm of riders, according to the police, were engaging in reckless behavior, such as doing wheelies and blocking traffic lanes before the collision on the causeway.
The dangerous episode prompted a police response that included attempts to halt the group of riders. According to an arrest report obtained by Local 10, officers were trying to pull over the group when one officer placed their cruiser ahead in the center lane, intending to stop the riders.
