Late-Night Fiery Wreck Kills Driver by Opa-Locka Airport

A man was killed late Friday night after his car slammed into a tree and burst into flames just outside Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport in northwest Miami-Dade, authorities said. Fire crews battled the blaze, but the driver died at the scene as investigators moved in to figure out what went wrong.

The wreck happened around 11:55 p.m. at Northwest 135th Street and Northwest 57th Avenue, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, as reported by WPLG Local 10. Investigators said the vehicle hit a tree and then caught fire. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews put out the flames and pronounced the driver, who has not yet been identified, dead at the scene.

The crash site sits just south of Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, a reliever general aviation field for Miami International Airport, according to Miami International Airport. The airport’s public information notes it hosts fixed-base operators and Coast Guard aviation units, and the surrounding corridor blends industrial operations with aviation-related businesses.
