Moldy Ice Machine and Live Roaches Prompt Emergency Closures at Two South Florida Restaurants

Florida inspectors ordered two South Florida restaurants to close on Oct. 5 after finding live roaches in both kitchens and, at one, a black and green mold-like buildup inside the ice machine. State inspection records list 44 violations at La Union Restaurant in Margate and 15 at Sawa in Coral Gables’ Shops at Merrick Park.

The two closures have since taken different paths. Sawa was recorded as reopened on Oct. 7, according to the state’s daily inspection feed as compiled by Florida Food Watch. La Union had no reopening recorded in that feed when Food World News checked on Oct. 9.

For diners in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the records offer more than a headline. They show which problems inspectors considered serious enough to stop service on the spot, and what a restaurant must fix before it can serve customers again.
