Suspects used disguises, stole from elderly shoppers, then bought gift cards, police say

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Boynton Beach Police arrested two women on Wednesday, accused of carrying out a months-long pickpocketing scheme that targeted elderly shoppers across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

According to investigators, 59-year-old Mavis Johnson of West Palm Beach and 57-year-old Tammy Evans of Boynton Beach worked together to steal wallets from unsuspecting victims and then use the stolen credit cards at local retailers, including Target and Publix stores in Boynton Beach. Detectives say both women are currently on probation for prior fraud and grand theft convictions.

Police say Johnson disguised herself during each theft, frequently changing outfits and wearing wigs and medical masks as she moved through stores searching for victims. Evans, investigators said, acted as the getaway driver and remained nearby as Johnson committed the thefts. Detectives believe the pair had been operating throughout the tri-county region for several months…
