5 nabbed in staged crash scam as Florida authorities cite nearly $31K insurance haul: CFO

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (CBS12) — Five people have been arrested in connection with what investigators say was a staged motor vehicle crash scheme designed to fraudulently collect insurance payments, Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia announced.

The arrests were announced by the Department of Financial Services’ Criminal Investigations Division (CID) on Monday, stemming from an investigation into a suspicious crash reported by an insurance company tip. Authorities identified the suspects as:

  • Yumilka Melendez Pagan
  • Yancenia Diaz
  • Milaimi Gonzalez Acosta
  • Alfredo Ernesto Phinney Estrada
  • Vidal Jose Rojas Balbas

Each faces charges tied to allegedly billing insurers for injuries that never occurred.

Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia said, “Staged crashes are dangerous schemes that put innocent lives at risk at the expense of someone’s financial gain. These criminals who tried to exploit the system for their own greed will face repercussions for their actions.”…
