HONOLULU (KHON2) — Tens of thousands are expected to attend the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Ceremony in person, along with many more watching on TV and online. While everyone has a different reason for being there, organizers hope they all share the feeling of aloha afterwards.
During the day, Ala Moana Beach Park is filled with those just soaking up the sun. But at night, candle-lit lanterns will cover the water and transform the beach into a sight that participants say shouldn’t be missed.
“I told them that they should come to this event because it’s a big thing that happens every year,” said Dariel Nakayama, Pearl City resident. “I said it’s an experience that you don’t wanna miss. It’s something that is very surreal. You will get emotional when you release the lanterns.”…
