HONOLULU (KHON2) — Catholic leaders from across Hawaii are launching a two-year celebration to commemorate 200 years of Catholicism in the islands while also announcing plans for a major restoration of one of the state’s most historic religious landmarks.
Church leaders unveiled plans for statewide events that will include community gatherings, educational programs, cultural activities and faith-centered celebrations leading up to the 200th anniversary in 2027.
They also emphasized that the restoration effort will ensure the landmark continues to serve Hawaii residents while preserving an important chapter of the state’s cultural, spiritual and historic heritage.
