Andy Johnson, dean of University of Hawaii coaches, sails off after 36 years

Andy Johnson, the grizzled skipper of the University of Hawaii sailing program, has called it a career after a fulfilling 36-year ride that included national championships and myriad advancements for the school’s only ocean-based sport.

His time as skipper ended with an appearance in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Fleet Race National Championship Western semifinals in St. Petersburg, Fla., on May 16.

There wasn’t much that the waterman failed to attain in the realm of collegiate sailing, a sport that exists outside the NCAA and lends itself to a workmanlike, hard-nosed approach. All sailing student-athletes compete without the benefit of scholarships…
